Man ‘shot’ by dog in South Cotabato

dogCOTABATO CITY, Philippines — “If a dog bites a man, that’s nothing; if a man bites a dog, that’s news,” so goes an old newsroom saw.

But nothing of the sort happened in Lake Sebu in South Cotabato where, according to a belated police report, a man is now dead after being “shot” by a dog.

The incident happened on October 3 in Sitio El Nofo. Neighbors immediately rushed the wounded Danny Awan Safi, 45, to a nearby hospital, but he soon died from buckshot wounds in various parts of the body.

Senior Inspector Henry Binas, chief of the Lake Sebu municipal police, said an investigation was continuing in an effort to better explain how, as Safi’s neighbors claimed, the dog “accidentally touched” the trigger of the victim’s shotgun as the animal passed by it.

Binas said the victim and a few neighbors and relatives were conversing in a passage way when Safi’s dog suddenly emerged and accidentally brushed against the weapon as it walked past the sling belt of the shotgun, which then fell against a slightly elevated bamboo gate’s base.

Binas said it was most likely that the dog accidentally kicked the shotgun’s trigger.
