MANILA, Philippines–The Department of Education (DepEd) is encouraging educators, historians and students to take part in a series of conferences that would cultivate an appreciation of Philippine history, culture and the arts.
The DepEd said the activities were also expected to provide teachers with new ways to generate learner interest in how the country has been shaped by past events.
From Oct. 23 to 25, the Philippine National Historical Society (PNHS) will hold its 35th National Conference on Local and National History at the University of Northern Philippines in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. The conference will serve as the venue for the discussion of new historical research and for the promotion of “national historical consciousness while cultivating an appreciation for the diversity in Philippine culture.”
The event, which seeks the participation of PNHS members, historians, public and private school teachers, also aims to promote awareness of regional histories, particularly in Northern Luzon, and to introduce to educators new strategies to keep their classes relevant and dynamic.
From Nov. 7 to 9, a national training for Social Studies and History teachers will be held at the Davao City National High School. The DepEd said the training aimed to “provide teachers with the opportunity to build advanced skills and strategies in teaching and encounter a holistic approach to learning Social Studies and History to encourage them to see their roles in the context of today’s ever-changing global environment.”
Target participants of the training are education supervisors and teachers of Social Studies and History. It will also be open to Social Studies club members and students from public and private high schools.
A seminar-workshop for teachers on culture, the arts and language in the elementary and secondary schools will be held by the Trends and Techniques Resource Center and Training Services on Nov. 23-24 at San Pablo City Central School in Laguna. The event has the theme: “Sining, Kultura, Wika at Kurikulum: Mga Pangangailangan sa Implementasyon ng K to 12 (Arts, Culture, Language and the Curriculum: Necessities for the K to 12 Implementation).”
