Phivolcs: Mayon continues to swell; Alert Level 3 still up

MANILA, Philippines–Mayon Volcano continued to build up strength on Friday, state volcanologists said.

Sulfur dioxide flux was measured at an average of 308 metric tons/day, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

Seven rockfall events were recorded in the past 24 hours. Tilt data also indicate continuous inflation at the base of the edifice since August.

Maricel Capa, science research specialist of Phivolcs, said Mayon continued to swell and their data indicate that it is still in a state of unrest.

The volcano continued to be on Alert Level 3, which means that magma is at the crater and that hazardous eruption is possible within weeks.
