MANILA, Philippines – Beleaguered Philippine National Police Director General Alan Purisima admitted Tuesday to the presence of corruption even at the PNP but vowed to stop it “no matter who got hurt”.
Testifying for the first time before the Senate committee on peace and order, Purisima said in Filipino how he was “ashamed” to admit that the former firearms and explosives office became “the seat of crime and corruption for the longest time”.
He said there were syndicates within the PNP that have enriched themselves by releasing fake license firearms permits and identification cards to security guards as well as fake permits to carry firearms outside of residence.
He cited how he put a stop to these abuses so it was but natural for those who profited from the corruption to want to destroy him so that it would be “business as usual” again.
“Hinding-hindi po ako papayag na magkakaganun. Hindi na uubra ang mag modus operandi nila, yan ang pinatigil ko at patuloy kong babantayan kahit sino man ang tamaan,” Purisima said.
(I will never allow that to happen. Their modus operandi will no longer work. That is what I put a stop to and I will continue to be vigilant no matter who gets hurt.)
