Mayon records minimal activity, but eruption still possible–Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines–The Mayon Volcano in Albay has registered minimal activity but the Philippine Institute of Volcanology (Phivolcs) said that an eruption could still occur in the next few weeks.

Senior Science specialist Nora Campita said Mayon did not register any volcanic quakes from 8:00 a.m. Tuesday to 8:00 a.m. Wednesday and no crater glows were recorded.

Mayon, however, recorded four rockfall events.

Campita added that Mayon released 569 metric tons of Sulphur Dioxide, a far cry from the 1,048 metric tons on Monday.

Even with the minimal activity, Campita said that an eruption could still be imminent as Mayon is still under Alert Level 3.

“We are continuing to monitor Mayon, even with its minimal activity,” Campita said. “A hazardous eruption could still happen in the future weeks.”
