MANILA, Philippines–The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Sunday said it would issue a formal resolution urging the House of Representatives to postpone anew the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, which has been set for Feb. 21, 2015.
Comelec Chair Sixto Brillantes Jr. said the election body was standing pat on its position that the youth council polls must not push through until after May 2016 so as not to interfere with the preparations for the national elections.
“That’s still our official position—that the SK elections must be postponed again,” Brillantes said.
But the Comelec chief said he was not at all worried the poll body may run out of time to prepare in case the polls push through.
“All we need is a month’s time or even less for preparations [should Congress deny our petition],” said Brillantes.
The registration period for the SK polls started on Saturday in the offices of election officers of every city and municipality. It will end on Sept. 29.–Jocelyn R. Uy
