MANILA, Philippines—Nine inmates detained at the Angono Municipal Police Station in Rizal province escaped early Friday as tropical storm “Mario” (international name: Fung-Wong) hit the country, according to radio reports.

Radio reports quoted Angono Police chief Superintendent Lucindo Laguna saying the inmates bolted through by destroying the ceiling of their jail cell using an improvised steel saw.

Laguna added the heavy deluge brought by “Mario” may have been used by the suspects to shield their escape.
