9 inmates bolt Angono jail as ‘Mario’ hits PH—reports
MANILA, Philippines—Nine inmates detained at the Angono Municipal Police Station in Rizal province escaped early Friday as tropical storm “Mario” (international name: Fung-Wong) hit the country, according to radio reports.
Radio reports quoted Angono Police chief Superintendent Lucindo Laguna saying the inmates bolted through by destroying the ceiling of their jail cell using an improvised steel saw.
Laguna added the heavy deluge brought by “Mario” may have been used by the suspects to shield their escape.
The Angono police chief said they are now investigating Police Officer 2 Jose Roque, the officer on duty when the inmates escaped.
A manhunt operation by the Rizal provincial police was launched to capture the suspects.
