MANILA, Philippines – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has filed a tax evasion case against former military comptroller Carlos Garcia and his wife Clarita.
BIR Commissioner Kim Jacinto-Henares said Thursday that the two failed to file their income tax return for taxable year 2004.
“They also failed to declare with the BIR income earned n 2004 amounting to P273.3 million which they or through their children who were minors with no visible means of income used to acquire properties and to make deposits in several bank accounts and financial statements,” Henares said.
The BIR said the Garcia’s total liability was pegged at P253.8 inclusive of increments.
This is not the first time that that Garcias were slapped with a tax evasion complaint before the DoJ.
In 2005, they were slapped with the same complaint for failure to pay taxes on investments allegedly entered into in 2002 and 2003. The DoJ has approved the filing of the case before the Court of Tax Appeals.
