Today, Sept. 12, is the 201st birth anniversary of sculptor Leoncio Asuncion. Born in Sta. Cruz, Manila, in 1813, he is known as the father of modern religious sculpture in the Philippines. Among his famous works are “La Tercera Caida,” which depicts the third fall of Christ on His way to Calvary. Asuncion died in 1888. In 1983, the National Historical Institute installed a marker at the facade of the Sta. Cruz Church in Manila in his memory.–Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
