MANILA, Philippines — Senator Nancy Binay vigorously denied the “baseless” allegations hurled against her family by a former vice mayor of Makati City.
“I deny in the strongest possible terms the latest allegations made against our name. It is easy to create stories that are baseless,” Binay said in a statement on Thursday.
“As a daughter who grew up seeing the hard work of my father to help better the lives of our countrymen, developments like these are saddening. But we are one as a family in this challenge. However hard this is, we remain focused in serving the people. We trust God that the truth will come out,” she said.
The senator was reacting to former Makati City Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado’s testimony at the Senate blue ribbon committee this Thursday that her father, Vice President Jejomar Binay, and other members of the family, including the senator herself, allegedly received kickbacks when the Vice President was still city mayor.
“It’s sad that the Senate is being used to spread baseless accusations. It is hard that we all have to go through this just because my father wants to continue to serve the people,” Senator Binay said.
“Despite all this, I am doing my job and responsibilities as a senator of the Republic, just like my father. We remain focused in serving the people and working to uplift their lives,” she added.
