MANILA, Philippines–The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is eyeing the demolition of the historic Anda Circle in Manila to ease traffic in the already congested port area.
Anda Circle is a roundabout located at the boundary of Intramuros and Port Area.
According to DPWH Undersecretary Raul Asis, the rotunda will be removed to make way for the installation of signal lights in the area, making it an ordinary intersection.
This way, Asis said, they hope to improve the flow of traffic, especially for giant truck trailers carrying containers to and from the Port Area.
The DPWH official added that they were still finalizing plans, including the place where the Anda monument, which was erected in honor of Simon de Anda, the Spanish governor of the Philippines from 1762 to 1764 who fought against British invaders, would be transferred.
According to him, they were coordinating with the National Historical Institute, Intramuros Administration and the Department of Tourism for the transfer of the monument.
“It will be transferred nearby. We are finalizing plans. Hopefully [these will be finished] by next week,” said Asis.
