‘Pinoy Kasi’ wins La Salle award

Columnist Michael Tan

MANILA, Philippines—A column in the Inquirer by chancellor Michael L. Tan of the University of the Philippines Diliman has been named Outstanding Published Column Article on Youth and Education in a Nationally Circulated Publication by The Lasallian Scholarum Awards (TLSA).

Tan’s “Child rights and WCST” (“Pinoy Kasi,” Opinion, Jan. 28, 2014), in which he wrote about the depravity of  webcam child sex tourism, was chosen over 81 others in the category. The award was received in Tan’s behalf by UP Diliman Information Office director Anril P. Tiatco on Sept. 1 in a ceremony held at the Makati Shangri-La hotel.

The theme of this year’s TLSA was “Shift Happens: Advocating change for youth and education.”

The judges were Sen. Juan Edgardo Angara, former Rep. Lorna Verano, filmmaker Pepe Diokno, De La Salle University student government president Carlo Inocencio and DLSU Office for Strategic Communications executive director Jose Mari Magpayo.

Now on its 11th year, TLSA recognizes outstanding media coverage of Filipino youth and education issues in print, photo, online, broadcast and campus journalism. It is sponsored by DLSU’s Office for Strategic Communications.
