Today, Sept. 5, is the 85th birth anniversary of National Artist for Architecture Ildefonso P. Santos Jr. Born in 1929 in Malabon, he made his first mark in modern landscape architecture with the Makati Commercial Center. At Rizal Park in Manila, Santos did the Artists’ Village, the Garden for the Blind and the setup of the tableau Execution of Dr. Jose Rizal. He was conferred the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award by the City of Manila in 1972 and the National Artist Award in 2006.–Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
