MANILA, Philippines – The Senate on Tuesday enforced the 90-day-preventive suspension on detained Senator Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada on plunder charges in connection with the pork barrel scam.
“We received today (Tuesday) the order of the Sandiganbayan also denying the motion for reconsideration of Senator Estrada and again we’re left with no recourse but to implement the order,” Senate President Franklin Drilon said during the session, responding to queries of Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III.
Estrada’s suspension came just a day after the Senate imposed the same preventive suspension against Senator Juan Ponce-Enrile, who has been charged and detained along with Estrada and Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr.
Sotto stood up to question the suspension of his colleagues in the minority bloc, saying only the Senate has the power to suspend or penalize its members.
