MANILA, Philippines – Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya and other transport officials and groups on Monday faced the Senate inquiry into current state of the country’s public and mass transport system.
The investigation by the Senate committee on public services was prompted by a Metro Rail Transit (MRT-3) train accident last August 13 that injured at least 38 people.
“Saan na tayo ngayon sa sitwasyon ng tranportasyon sa ating bansa? Saan n’yo kami nais ngayong dalhin?”Senator Grace Poe, who presides over the hearing, said in her opening statement.
(Under what state is our country’s transport system? Where do you plan to take us?)
Poe, who rode the MRT 3 Friday to personally experience the everyday struggles of passengers, said the hearing sought to find solution to the country’s transport system and help address the problem.
The hearing was initiated by several senators, including Sonny Angara, Nancy Binay, Bam Aquino and Aqulino “Koko” Pimentel III.
