‘Sentensyador’ killed in Malabon cockfighting accident

MANILA, Philippines—A man who worked as “sentensyador” or referee at cockfights in Malabon died after getting stabbed accidentally in the chest and abdomen by the razor-sharp steel spurs of a cock he was handling, police said.

A report by the Malabon police on Tuesday said the accident that claimed the life of Ambrosio Gonzales, 63, of No. 148 Santiangco, Catmon, Malabon, occurred around 11:20 a.m. Monday during a “tupada” or cockfight on Dulong Acero Street in Tugatog, a depressed section of the city which police say usually plays host to illegal gambling activities.

Sharp stainless steel spurs two to three inches long are tied to both legs of cocks prior to a match.

According to the report filed by investigators PO2 Roldan Angeles and PO1 Junny Delgado, Gonzales was taken to the Pagamutang Bayan ng Malabon but was declared dead at 11:55 a.m.
