Binays done for if Mercado talks

Vice President Jojo Binay and his son, Makati Mayor Junjun, say their accusers—Renato Bondal and Nicolas Enciso—are “politically motivated” and should not be believed.

Bondal and Enciso are accusing Jojo and Junjun Binay, who is now the Makati mayor, of grossly overpricing the P2.6-billion Makati parking building.

Just because Bondal and Enciso are the political enemies of the father-son tandem doesn’t mean they are not capable of telling the truth.

What’s the logic behind calling their accusation a lie when they have presented overwhelming evidence to support their claim?

What if the public is told that Barangay Chair Enciso is suffering from Stage 4 cancer and expects not to live long and, therefore, his words should be given credence?

The popular belief is that a man who is dying and reveals an important secret wants to have a clear conscience.

What would Enciso get from accusing innocent people of wrongdoing as the Binays claim they are?

The usual defense of an elective official under attack for corruption or incompetence is that his detractor’s intentions are “politically motivated.”

But as my fellow columnists in the Inquirer, Winnie Monsod and Neal Cruz, commented: So what if the accusation is politically motivated?

Does it mean that the accusers are telling a lie just because they are political enemies of the elective official under siege, Monsod and Cruz wrote.

So only a political ally of an elective official who spills the beans on him/her is telling the truth?

But why would his political ally tell on a corrupt elective official?

I was told former Makati Vice Mayor Nestor Mercado would be one of the resource persons Tuesday in the Senate subcommittee investigating the allegedly overpriced Makati parking building.

If Mercado spills the beans on the Binays—including Jojo’s wife, Elenita, also a former Makati mayor—the Binays are done for.

Mercado used to be very close to Jojo, but they had a falling out.

Jojo allegedly promised Mercado he would support him when his turn comes to run for mayor.

But Jojo reneged on his promise and supported his wife, Elenita, and later Junjun, for the post of Makati mayor instead.

Mercado allegedly knows about Jojo Binay’s sources of extra revenues.

Mayor Junjun Binay is probably so engrossed in making tons of money that he has apparently failed to notice the continuing deterioration of the city’s peace and order situation.

Every day, holdups and other crimes take place in the premier city.

Along Pasong Tamo (now Chino Roces Ave.), holdups happen almost every day because there are no policemen patrolling the long stretch of road from J.P. Rizal to Edsa.

The abusive behavior of policemen in the city—as in the case of Supt. Angelo Germinal who shot a 13-year-old scavenger to death for no apparent reason—goes unpunished.

Junjun Binay doesn’t care about crime in the city so long as money keeps coming into his and his family’s pockets.
