A Capitol official assured residents living near the Cebu provincial jail in barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City, that the stench caused by the overflow of wastewater from the jail will be resolved in the next few months.
Engineer Adolfo Quiroga, Cebu Provincial Planning and Development Office (CPPDO) chief, said a separate wastewater treatment facility was already set up and will be operational in three months.
He said the facility only needs two ponds to store the liquid wastes discharged from the provincial jail for treatment.
“It will be processed from the septic tank… It will be pumped towards the treatment facility tank. Chlorine will be poured so the water could be recycled,” he told reporters yesterday.
Quiroga said the jail only has one septic tank, which was already filled to full capacity and overflowed.
Last June, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources gave the provincial jail three months to repair its wastewater treatment facility.
The agency received complaints from barangay Kalunasan residents about the foul smell and pollution caused by the wastewater discharge. /Correspondent Carmel Loise Matus
