CARTOONIST Rene Elevera has been Cebu Daily News’ news and opinion illustrator since 2004.
Each weekday, he confers with the paper’s assigned editorial writer for material from which he takes inspiration to draw award-winning editorial cartoons.
On Sundays, he illustrates the essays of the acclaimed poet and writer Judge Simeon Dumdum Jr.
In 2009, Elevera won Best Editorial Cartoon in the 14th Cebu Archdiocesan Mass Media Awards.
In 2006 and 2010, he shared in the recognition of the Best Opinion Page Awards given to Cebu Daily News by the Philippine Press Institute.
“Cartoonists should help educate and inform the public,” he said.
“As a cartoonist, I marry creativity with my political statements to make my cartoons effective.”
He drew the cartoon above to accompany CDN’s editorial on the proposed “Anti-Tabloid Ordinance.”
Elevera was a part-time cartoonist for the Negros Chronicle and the Dumaguete Inquirer beginning in his second year of studying architecture at the Polytechnic College-Central Visayas. In 1994, he joined The Freeman as a cartoonist. He also works as creative director for a Manila-based magazine today. /Copy Editor Jason A. Baguia
