MANILA, Philippines – If Father Daniel Tansip, Presidential Security Group (PSG) chaplain, had his way, he wants President Benigno Aquino III to continue serving the country ad infinitum.

“I’m just an ordinary priest. On a personal note, I hope our beloved President’s service would never end so that he can continue with what he’s started – that is to walk down the straight and righteous path,” said Tansip who officiated the mass for the 31st death anniversary of Aquino’s father, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.

Tansip’s remarks came amid debates on whether Aquino’s six-year term should be extended.

“I for one as priest believe that right at this very moment the senator, your father and of course your mother as well is very happy with the achievements of their children,” Tansip added, referring to Aquino’s mother, the late Corazon Aquino, whose tomb lies beside that of the senator.

He said the reason people continue to visit Ninoy’s grave was because they wanted to remember a person who loved the Filipinos and paved the way for change.

(Although he is no longer by our side, he remains in our memories, our hearts and our minds, especially those of his children. The goodness that he taught and showed has been acquired by his children.)

Addressing the President and his sisters Kris Aquino, Maria Elena “Ballsy” Aquino-Cruz, Aurora Corazon “Pinky” Aquino- Abellada, and Victoria Elisa “Viel” Aquino-Dee, Tansip said Ninoy rightfully deserves to be called a hero and a martyr because he sacrificed his life for the betterment of his country.

Also present during the mass were Senate President Franklin Drilon, Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, Social Welfare Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman, and Congresswoman Gina De Venecia.

Sa ating mga nakikiisa ngayon sa pag-aalay ng misa at pananalangin, higit po nating inuugnay sa — ang ating pagiging tunay na Kristiyano sapagkat bahagi tayo ng tinatawag po natin na mystical body of Christ; and the mystical body of Christ is the whole member of the Church, both the living and the dead and those in heaven.

The church as one united in faith makes our prayers for the dead remembered in all churches as we offer the mass to our faithful departed ones.

Ang buong simbahan ang gumugunita sa kanila sapagkat ito’y palaging bahagi ng … sa misa ng pananalangin na sinasabi nating: “Remember our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face.”

Siguro po kung nabubuhay pa si Sir Ninoy, he will be very, very proud of his son — our beloved President.

But Jesus in his desire to change and transform the world continued his mission and bravely faced the challenges even in the face of death to serve and love the people entrusted to his care and established the church for which we are now benefiting the graces and blessings it give through the sacraments.

As we remember and offer this mass to your father, let us pray as well for all of us here present especially to our beloved President. Let us ask the Good Lord for continuous guidance, for the grace and strength, so that we may be able to continue our mission to serve and be always part of the straight path, our beloved President is determined to push through.

Our loved ones who has gone ahead of us are happy and joyful in heaven when they see us here on earth helping and contributing our efforts to make others life better. To make the life of our countrymen better by moving forward towards the right direction — ang matuwid na daan.

I, for one, as priest believes that right at this very moment, the late Senator, your father, and of course your mother as well, are very happy with the achievements of their children.

May God bless us all.
