MANILA, Philippines – Senator Nancy Binay said she felt like her colleagues would like to put an “M” tag on her forehead. “M,” she said, stands for “Magnanakaw” (thief).
Senator Binay made this remark as she protested on Wednesday how some of her colleagues handled the investigation on the allegedly overpriced new Makati City Hall II parking building involving her relatives.
While Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, who presided over the proceeding, was “fair” in conducting the hearing, Senator Binay noted that some senators ganged up on her brother, Makati Mayor “Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay.
“Hindi na naman ako nagugulat du’n sa ganu’ng klaseng pagtatanong ni Senator Trillanes di ba? As we’ve seen in other hearings, ‘pag kakakampi n’ya, ang bait diba…Tapos ‘pag gusto n’yang magdiin, makikita n’yo naman…” the lady senator said when asked about Senator Antonio Trillanes IV’s manner of questioning during the hearing.
(I’m no longer surprised with that kind of questioning by Senator Trillanes. As we’ve seen in other hearings, he’s kind to his allies…Then if he wants to pin down somebody, you will see it…)
“I think lumalabas naman talaga ‘yung mga biases pag nagka-conduct ng questions (I think the biases would show in the line of questioning),” she said.
Asked about Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano, Senator Binay said it was unfortunate that her colleague took the opportunity to pin down her brother, considering the territorial spat between neighbors Makati City and Taguig over The Fort (Fort Andres Bonifacio).
Cayetano’s wife, Lani, is the incumbent mayor of Taguig.
“Sa ganitong sitwasyon, walang laban ‘yung kapatid ko e. Sina Senator Cayetano, parang sila ang may position, may upper hand sa ganitong hearing…” Senator Binay said.
(In this situation, my brother is helpless. It seems that Senator Cayetano was in the position, he had the upper hand in this kind of hearing)
“This hearing is not a fair venue kasi nga may differences sa position, ‘yung mga senador na nagtatanong, kumabaga, arena namin ito e,” she said.
(This hearing is not a fair venue because we have differences in position. This is the senator’s arena.)
The lady senator then wondered whether the hearing was indeed in aid of legislation or was just meant to destroy the name of her family.
“Sabi ko nga kanina, ang feeling ko kulang na lang, ‘yung mga kasamahan ko ukitan ako dito sa noo ko ng M, magnanakaw,” she said in jest.
