Twenty-five fishermen from Batangas province were arrested on Thursday by Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) personnel for allegedly conducting dynamite fishing in waters off Zambales province.
Nelson Bien, head of the regulatory and law enforcement division of the BFAR in Central Luzon, said the fishermen tried to evade arrest when they were caught using dynamite sticks while fishing
70 kilometers (40 nautical miles) off Iba town, the province’s capital.
“These fishermen were on board a large vessel, and when we approached them, they hit our boat, apparently trying to resist [arrest],” Bien said. He said they needed to fire two warning shots before they were able to seize the fishermen’s vessel and arrest them. Allan Macatuno, Inquirer Central Luzon
