MANILA, Philippines–Retired General Jovito Palparan has considered surrendering before but backed out because information he received about threats to his life.
“Ever since, I have always considered surrendering but there are security problems,” Palparan said expressing doubts if the government can protect him.
Palparan said he received tips that he is a target of the New People’s Army.
He was arrested at a house in Valenzuela cor. Teresa Streets near Stop and Shop in Old Sta. Mesa, Manila. The place where Palparan was hiding was only 350 meters away from the Manila Police District (MPD) Station 8.
Palparan did not resist arrest.
“There are no untoward incidents. The arrest was proper,” Palparan said.
Palparan, who was bearded when he was arrested, said his decision to grow facial hair was not a disguise.
“Wala naman akong pinopormahan (I was not trying to look good for anyone),” he said in jest.
Palparan said that he would even roam around Robinson’s Place Manila where he would meet with some of his political allies in a coffee shop there.
