Makati streets yield over 600 homeless folk

More than 600 homeless persons—many of them minors—have been taken off Makati City streets from June to July this year, according to local officials.

A report from the Makati Anti-Drug Abuse Council said the “rescue” of 622 street dwellers was in line with the police campaign against petty street crimes and road accidents that often involve unsupervised minors.

The two-month rescue operation covered P. Burgos Street, Tigris, Polaris, Makati Avenue and Kalayaan Avenue in Barangay Poblacion;  Linera, Rodriguez, Mabini, Bonifacio, Evangelista and Belarmino in Bangkal, and Arnaiz and Medina streets in Pio del Pilar.

The minors were turned over to their parents while the adults were referred either to the Makati Social Development Center or Makati Youth Homes.

Those with no families in Makati were brought to Jose Fabella Center in Mandaluyong. Kristine Felisse Mangunay
