Militants blast calls for Aquino term extension
MANILA, Philippines—The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) has dismissed calls to extend the term of President Benigno Aquino III as “absurd” and a bid to divert public opinion away from the controversial Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP).
Bayan Secretary General Renato Reyes said the demands made by Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas and a Facebook group calling for an extension of the Chief Executive’s term are “attempts to paint an illusion of good governance under Aquino.”
Reyes, in an interview with Radyo Inquirer, accused the Palace of fabricating these calls in order to cover up the “sins” of the Aquino government such as the DAP and the “pork” barrel scam.
Reyes added that the Aquino government should be accountable and should not be allowed to rule beyond the constitutional limit for the presidency.
In a televised interview, DILG Secretary Roxas stated he wants term extension for Aquino in order for the president to continue its administration’s “tuwid na daan” initiative in reforming the government.
