Yellow rainfall alert raised in Metro Manila, 4 other areas

MANILA, Philippines-The state weather bureau has said that Typhoon “Jose” has weakened, but strong rains caused by the southwest monsoon (Habagat) continue to batter parts of Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

In its latest advisory, The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has raised the yellow rainfall warning in Metro Manila, Bataan, Cavite, Rizal and Zambales with 7.5 to 15.5 mm of rain to be expected in these areas in the next two hours. Low-lying areas will also experience flooding. Light to moderate with occasional heavy rains will also pour in Laguna, Batangas, Bulacan and portions of Pampanga and Quezon which may persist within the next three hours, while Tarlac and Nueva Ecija will experience downpour in the next two hours.

In a separate weather bulletin, Pagasa said that the Jose has weakened as it keeps its track approaching the northern regions of the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

It said that “Jose” packs maximum sustained winds of 165 kilometers per hour and gusts of 200 kph with its eye located at 840 km east southeast of Aparri, Cagayan as of 4 p.m.

Pagasa added that “Jose” moves at 11 kph north northwest and will enhance the southwest monsoon.

Ilocos Region and Central Luzon may experience monsoon rains which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have occasional rains while Visayas and Caraga will have cloudy skies and occasional rains.

Other parts of Mindanao will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rains.

As of 6 p.m., Marikina River was at 14.5 meters, .5 m short of Alert Level One.
