MANILA, Philippines – One died while seven were injured after a truck plowed through seven vehicles (not eight, as previously reported) on the southbound lane of Circumferential Road (C5)-Kalayaan in Makati City before dawn Monday.
A 14-wheeler dump truck carrying sand lost its brakes and crashed into several vehicles around 3 a.m. Monday, a Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Metrobase officer told INQUIRER.net in a phone interview.
The dump truck, which reportedly had engine trouble, was parked by its driver along a steep portion of C5 but slid backwards and hit a six-wheeler truck, three taxis, a closed van, a sport utility vehicle and a private sedan car.
Radio reports said that the lone fatality was a certain Richard Parado, alias Eboy, a 24-year-old from Parañaque City.
Parado was riding a glass-carrying six-wheeler truck that was among those directly hit by dump truck.
The 14-wheeler, which bore the plate number UNE-539, was reportedly owned by Treasure Rock Movers.
It added that the driver of the truck and his companion fled the scene amid the accident.
It took almost six hours for the Makati and Taguig Police and MMDA traffic personnel to clear the area, which was opened to traffic at 9:35 a.m.
The accident caused the heavy traffic in some major roads in Metro Manila.
