NEW DELHI–A moderate 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of the Andaman Islands on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said.
The agency said the quake struck at 7:41 p.m. (1341 GMT) in the Bay of Bengal between Myanmar’s western coastline and the Andaman Islands at a depth of 10 kilometers.
There were no immediate reports of damage.
USGS said the quake’s epicenter lay 284 kilometers (176 miles) east of Port Blair and 365 kilometers west of Myeik, the nearest major city in Myanmar.
The region lies on the Sunda megathrust, an intensely seismic area of the world where quakes are a common occurrence.
