MANILA, Philippines—A man allegedly set on fire the body of his female companion after strangling her to death inside a motel room in Goa town, Camarines Sur, police said.

The man also killed himself.

The charred bodies of Rommel Clariño, 43, and Joana ‎Iraula, 22, were discovered by police and Goa Fire Department on Wednesday at Papillion Motor Lodge in Barangay (village) Tagongtong.

Police found Iraula’s body on the bed with her arms crossed over her chest, Chief Inspector Chito Oyardo, Goa Municipal Police Station chief, said in a phone interview on Thursday.

‎Based on the initial investigation, Oyardo said Clariño allegedly strangled the woman, doused her with kerosene and set the body on fire.

Later, the man also set himself on fire.

The aunt of the woman said the possible motive was jealousy.

Three hours before their bodies were discovered, Oyardo said people inside the motel heard the two arguing.

Senior Inspector Maria Luisa Calubaquib said in a text message to reporters on Thursday that authorities found a sachet shabu or metamphetamine hydrochloride and two bottles of gin inside the motel room of the Clariño and Iraula.

A Honda Wave 100 motorcycle bearing plate number 2756 EY belonging to Clariño was impounded by authorities.
