Cebu City to market recycled materials next week

NEARLY a month after its implementation, the Cebu City government is expected to earn from its garbage segregation program starting next week, the Inayawan landfill site chief said yesterday.

Inayawan landfill manager Randy Navarro said they already produced about 400 tons of compost materials from the dumpsite which are ready for sale to interested customers.

The compost material will be sold at P10 per kilo while recycled plastic materials will be sold at P85 centavos per kilo.

“Napuno na ang mi diri ug composting materials (We are already filled with compost materials),” Navarro told Cebu Daily News.

Navarro said they even have to bring some of the composting material at Barangay Guba to accommodate the processing of more fertilizers.

The city government closed the Inayawan landfill last April to launch its waste segregation program full-blast.

The biodegradable garbage will undergo processing at the material recovery facility (MRF) in Inayawan where they will be dried under the sun for a fixed period.

Navarro said the Inayawan landfill produces at least 10 tons of composting materials daily.

These composting material can serve as fertilizer to soften dried soil.

Though they haven’t received orders yet, Navarro said the city government started to use the fertilizer.

City Hall’s Parks and Playground committee also requested to use the composting materials in the memorial park at the Osmeña Shrine in barangay Kalunasan, he added.

In a related development, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama will join other mayors from around the world in a five-day environment summit in Israel next month.

Mayors around the world will discuss among themselves and with Israel’s national leaders their environment programs, including visits to historical, cultural, scientific and religious landmarks in the Holy Land.
