Carcar tree falls, blocks traffic on busy highway
CEBU CITY—The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will inspect the trees that line the national highway in Carcar City after one of these fell on Saturday and blocked the highway for hours.
Eddie Llamedo, DENR Central Visayas spokesperson, said rotting trees would be cut to prevent a similar incident.
Acacia trees that are said to be a century old line the highway in Baranga Perrelos in Carcar, creating a canopy on the two-lane road and for which the village is known.
In 2005, the Carcar municipal council passed an ordinance declaring the acacia trees as part of the city’s historical heritage.
The fallen tree also damaged three houses in the village but no one was hurt, said Perrelos barangay chair Richard Ybanez. Carmel Loise Matus and Jhunnex Napallacan, Inquirer Visayas
