MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Police was placed on heightened alert Friday afternoon ahead of three major events in the country, including President Benigno Aquino’s national address Monday.
The PNP placed all its units on heightened alert at 3 p.m.
Heightened alert means at least half of the police force must be at their post and ready for deployment any time.
Three consecutive events are set to unfold, from the 100th year celebration of Iglesia Ni Cristo on Sunday, the President’s State of the Nation Address (Sona) on Monday, and Eid-al-Fitr, the Islamic Feast of Breaking the Fast, on Tuesday.
PNP Chief Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac in a press briefing earlier this week said police unit commanders were reminded to secure all vital installations, economic key points, as well as places of convergence, and ensure high state of operational readiness to deter unlawful activities.
Sindac said 10,000 policemen would be deployed in Metro Manila and in nearby provinces.
