Today, July 25, is the 33rd death anniversary of National Artist for Film Gerardo “Gerry” de Leon. He was born Sept. 12, 1913, in Manila. He directed acclaimed films like “Ang Maestra” and “Ama’t Anak,” and received many awards, including the Natatanging Gawad Urian award in 1977. He won the Famas Best Director award seven times between 1952 and 1972. He was named national artist in 1982, a year after his death.
