MANILA, Philippines—Vice President Jejomar Binay on Wednesday called on the public to follow the rule of law and hold the administration accountable, especially in ensuring that government funds are properly spent.
“Sundin natin ang ating mga batas. Maging aktibo rin tayo sa pagpapanagot sa pamahalaan upang tiyaking tama ang pamamalakad, lalo na ang paggamit ng mga pondo sa mga programang ipinatutupad nito,” Binay said in a statement on the country’s commemoration of Apolinario Mabini’s 150th birthday.

(Let’s follow the rule of law. We should be active in holding our government accountable and making sure that it is run properly, especially when it concerns the use of funds for various programs.)
Binay’s call came amid President Benigno Aquino III’s continued defense of funds under the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP).
“Naniwala si Mabini na mahalaga ang mga instrumento ng pamahalaan kagaya ng mga batas upang matutuhang pahalagahan ng mga tao ang kanilang kalayaan,” the Vice President said.
(Mabini believed that government instruments like the law are important so that people may truly value their independence.)
“Naniwala din siyang ang demokrasiya ay magtatagumpay kung makikilahok ang taumbayan sa pagbuo ng bansa. At magkakaroon ng pagnanais na makilahok ang mga tao kung naniniwala sila sa pangangailangan at pagkakaroon ng katuwiran sa mga ipinatupad na batas, at ang pamahalaan ay daan o kaakibat sa pagkamit ng magandang buhay,” he said.
(He also believed that democracy would triumph if the people join in building the nation. The people would be more encouraged if they believe that the laws exist and are just and that the government aids in their attainment of a better life.)
Binay then urged Filipinos to be part of efforts to build a progressive, just and humane nation.
