11 inmates escape Mandaluyong jail; 1 recaptured

MANILA, Philippines –Eleven detainees bolted the Mandaluyong City Police jail Monday dawn, but one of the escapees was recaptured by police hours later.

The inmates – whose cases ranged from theft to possession of illegal drugs – sawed off the metal bars of the window of the toilet behind Mandaluyong City Police Station’s cell between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.

Senior Superintendent Tyrone Masigon, Mandaluyong City Police chief, told INQUIRER.net in a phone interview identified the captured theft detainee as Gabby Capistrano.

He said police operatives are still hunting down the 10 other escapees.

Asked why night shift officers at the police station failed to stop the escapees, Masigon explained: “Ang rehas kasi, sa loob ng CR so hindi visible sa labas. Sa likod lang ang daan nila,” he explained.

In a radio interview, he said five police officers on duty have already been sacked.‎‎

Some of the 11 who escaped were “pressured” by a certain Jordan Villadolid, a detainee accused for falsifying public documents.

“Some of them did not have the intention to escape. They were threatened by their fellow inmates,” Masigon said.

Still at large were identified as:

–          Anjo Remanes (illegal possession of bladed weapons)

–          Archie‎ Pacheco (illegal drugs case)

–          Alexander Delo Cruz aka Anday (theft)

–          Celestino Lopez (theft)

–          Nelson Yambac (robbery)

–          Jayson Santos (robbery)

–          Alber Llaneta (theft)

–          Noel Gonzales (theft)

–          Rogelio Reyes (illegal drugs case)

–          Fernando Nana Jr.(theft)

“The materials they used and how the inmates were able to sneak in the metal saw are now the subject of our investigation,” Masigon said.
