MANILA, Philippines–The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) plans to file an insurance claim for damage suffered by the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 when strong winds spawned by Typhoon “Glenda” pushed two foreign jetliners into the building.
“We have to look at the legality of insurance claims since the two incidents are acts of God,” said MIAA General Manager Jose Angel Honrado.
As Glenda battered Metro Manila and nearby provinces, its winds pushed a parked Singapore Airlines Boeing B777-200 into an air bridge of Terminal 1. The plane’s left wing sustained severe damage.
The winds likewise spun a parked Malaysian Airlines Boeing B737-800 45 degrees into the mobile service stairs nearby.
No one was reported hurt in either incident.
“The safe stowage of an aircraft is the responsibility of the airlines and not the MIAA,” Honrado said.
He noted that some airlines managed to fly their planes to safety in Clark, Cebu and even outside the country. Other airlines kept their planes in hangars and remote parking areas.
