MANILA, Philippines–The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) on Thursday said it would implement a three-hour rotating brownout in Metro Manila amid transmission problems caused by Typhoon “Glenda” (international name: Rammasun).
“A 3-hour emergency Manual Load Dropping/rotating brownout was implemented due to the inability of plants in the south area to generate because of transmission outages,” Meralco said in a statement.
Parts of Manila, Makati, Quezon City, Pasay and Bulacan will be affected.
The statement came after an earlier announcement that it has restored energy in majority of its franchise areas after strong winds toppled power lines in Luzon.
“As of 7 a.m., 64% of Meralco franchise area has power,” the company said over Twitter.
On Wednesday, 86 percent or around 4.6 million of Meralco’s customers, mostly in Metro Manila, Cavite, Quezon and parts of Rizal and Batangas were affected by power outages.
The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) earlier said that its transmission lines in Southern Luzon remained down.
Meralco has begun clearing operations and repair of its distribution facilities, including poles, transformers, wires and subtransmission lines.
It asked the public to remain patient, especially since there is still no estimated time of restoration.
