A ‘stormy’ start for 3 Navotas couples

While most Navoteños were in no mood to celebrate after Typhoon “Glenda” pummeled Metro Manila with strong winds and heavy rains on Wednesday, it was a most memorable day for three couples who said their “I dos.”

Amidst the howling wind and downpour, Navotas Mayor John Rey Tiangco wed the three happy pairs in civil rites held at city hall at 11 a.m.

One of the brides, Magdalena Gutierrez, 35, said she did not mind getting married to her fiance, Japanese national Kiyoshi Nakahara, in foul weather.

“The heavy rains were not an inconvenience and besides, I do not believe in superstitions,” she added.

According to her, she and Nakahara wanted to get married immediately because he was leaving on Friday. “We grabbed the chance,” Gutierrez said.

The other newlyweds were Ivan Abasola and Baverly Melendres, and Frankie Lustero and Jesila Rio.

Public information officer Jayne Banayad said there were supposed to be four couples yesterday but one pair was unable to attend the mass wedding ceremony.

“The city hall holds civil weddings every Wednesdays and the couples requested that the ceremony push through since their caterers had already prepared the food for their receptions,” Banayad told the Inquirer.
