MANILA, Philippines—Marikina City ordered a preemptive evacuation of residents threatened by floods coming from the Marikina River, according to a radio report Wednesday.
The order came amid heavy rains dumped by Typhoon “Glenda” as it ravaged Metro Manila and several provinces earlier in the day.
The report said eight floodgates have been opened to ease the swelling of the river whose level rose to about 15 meters.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said “Glenda” would be out of the country by Thursday.
