Enrile undergoes another eye checkup

MANILA, Philippines — Senator Juan Ponce Enrile returned anew to an eye clinic in Makati City on Sunday morning, his fourth time since surrendering to authorities on the plunder and graft charges against him in the pork barrel scam.

The 90-year-old senator was seen wearing a white and red striped shirt and cream-colored pants as he boarded a Philippine National Police ambulance that brought him to the Asian Eye Institute in Rockwell.

The convoy, escorted by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, left the PNP General Hospital at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

The senator’s checkup for his eye condition or macular degeneration reportedly lasted less than 10 minutes, with Enrile back at the PNP Hospital by around 9 a.m.

The visit was the fourth time for this month since the senator surrendered himself to the CIDG on July 5 following the Sandiganbayan’s issuance of an arrest warrant for the pork barrel scam.

But unlike last week’s checkup, Enrile did not give a statement to mediamen and went through the basement entrance of the clinic instead of the front entrance.

On Saturday, the senator went to the eye clinic for an injection for his age-related eye condition, which could lead to blindness.

The lawmaker has a twice-a-month checkup and treatment of his eyes – an injection for the first day and a follow-up check up the next day, according to the PNP.
