Today, July 11, is the 23rd death anniversary of National Artist for Theater and Music Honorata “Atang” de la Rama. Known as the “Queen of Zarzuela and the Kundiman,” she was born on Jan. 11, 1902, in Pandacan, Manila. De la Rama was the first Filipino actress to appear in movies. She received the President’s medal of merit in 1966 and the Sagisag ng Lungsod ng Maynila in 1964. Named a national artist in 1987, she died in 1991. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
