MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang on Thursday denied it used the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) to buy surveillance equipment to spy on the opposition.

“No, we are too busy with governance. Let me assure Congressman (Toby) Tiangco that we are focused on governance,” Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said, adding that the 2016 elections are still a long way off.

Lacierda was reacting to a television statement of Tiangco, the spokesperson of the United Nationalist Alliance, accusing the Aquino administration of spying on them.

Lacierda, however, confirmed that the government bought surveillance gadgets to be used for the World Economic Forum last May and the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum (APEC) in 2015.

“Definitely, it was not used for them,” he said.
