A teenage girl died in Pasig City after she accidentally slipped and fell from the stairs of her school building while taking a selfie with her phone, the police said Thursday.
The victim, a Grade 9 student of Rizal High School (RHS), died while receiving treatment at Rizal Medical Center for the head wounds and hip fracture she sustained in the fall.
Pasig City police chief Senior Supt. Mario Rariza said the girl fell into the stairwell from the third floor of the Isidro Rodriguez Building at the RHS compound in Barangay Caniogan.
The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. Monday but was reported by the school security office to the police only on Thursday.
Rariza said the girl and a classmate were hanging out near the stairwell during a class break when they decided to have some fun by taking selfies.
The teenager was also seen taking an energy drink while taking photos of herself when she fell off and landed on a second-floor platform.
She was immediately brought by the assistant principal and other staff members to the nearest hospital, where she died from her injuries about an hour later.
In an Inquirer interview, Rariza said investigators later learned from the girl’s family that she had been having dizzy spells prior to the incident.
