Cops eye 11 fraternity men as suspects in Servando fatal hazing

MANILA, Philippines—The Manila Police are eyeing 11 members of Tau Gamma Phi–not Alpha Kappa Rho (AKRHO)–as suspects in the killing of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde student during the fraternity’s hazing rites in Manila last Saturday.

Guillo Cesar Servando, 18, died inside a unit of condominium One Archers Place on Taft Avenue after sustaining multiple injuries from Tau Gamma Phi’s initiation rites.

Of the 11, three have been identified by the police, said Chief Superintendent R‎olando Asuncion, Manila Police District (MPD) District Director said in a television interview.

“We have already identified three students of St. Benilde. The 11 students, two were alumni, led the initiation rites,” Asuncion said.

Media reports earlier named Trex Garcia and Hans Tamaring as two of the 11 students.

Aside from Servando, John Paul Raval and Lorenz Agustin, both 18, Levin Flores and Lawrence Ramos were injured in the incident.

They are all currently in hospital for medical treatment, said Asuncion.

But he said, one of the victims will accompany the police to the place where the initiation rites took place.

“Hopefully, as soon as we complete the documents we need, we can file the case either tomorrow or on Wednesday,” ‎Asuncion said. ‎‎

It was earlier reported that the fraternity responsible was A‎KRHO University of Santo Tomas (UST) chapter.

But the UST administration denied its involvement, saying the student victims are not even registered as students of the university.

“The UST is deeply saddened to learn about the unfortunate death of Mr. Guillo Cesar Servando, a student of the (DLS-CSB)‎. Our thought and prayers are with his family,” the UST posted in its official Facebook page.

“A quick but thorough verification of UST’s automated records revealed that Mr. Trex Garcia and Mr. Hans Tamaring are not UST students and that Alpha Kappa Rho Fraternity is not in the official roster of recognized student organizations of UST.”

“We shall monitor the progress of the police investigation and shall extend full cooperation with the proper authorities with the end in view of identifying and punishing the persons guilty of this reprehensible crime,” it added.
