Missing ship mate found dead in Pasig River

MANILA, Philippines—The body of a ship crewmember, who had gone missing for a day, was found Monday morning  floating in the Pasig River in Manila.

John Rey Haro, 22, a crewmember of MT Isloff Gusto, owned by the Island Integrated Offshore Service Inc., was discovered at around 5 a.m. floating on the water near his docked tugboat at the portion of the Pasig River along A. Cristobal St. in Paco.

Police Officer 2 Jose Gumilan, of the Manila Police District homicide section, said that Haro and three other co-employees are live-aboard workers on the boat.

When Haro went missing sometime between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Sunday, his 43-year-old uncle Joel Haro, Jehu Cruz, and another co-worker thought he had gone ashore to hear Mass at a nearby Church but were surprised when he did not turn up the whole day.

On Monday, Gumilan revealed, Cruz discovered Haro’s body floating near the tugboat and fished him out of the river. He then reported his find to the police.

The body was brought to the St. Yvan funeral parlor for autopsy and safekeeping.

Gumilan observed no external injury on Haro’s body and theorized that the ship worker may have accidentally fallen into the water and drowned.
