MANILA, Philippines–At the height of the heavy rain in Metro Manila on Thursday afternoon, an upscale mall in Makati City was not spared from floodwater.

A photo contributed by Connie Faye Lomibao showed floodwater inside the Power Plant Mall in Makati City.

Nicole Reyes, marketing supervisor of Rockwell Land Corporation, told INQUIRER.net that the flood was caused by a “disengaged storm drain pipe.”

“The overflow of water on the Concourse Level of the Power Plant Mall on June 26, 2014 at around 3:30 p.m. was caused by a disengaged storm drain pipe from the roof deck, located above a food establishment on that level,” Reyes said in a statement.

She said that the mall’s operations team had “contained the situation” and stopped the surge of water.

“Major operations in the Concourse level have resumed,” Reyes said.

On Thursday afternoon, heavy rain triggered gutter-deep floods in the metropolis, snarling traffic on major thoroughfares.
