MANILA, Philippines — At least P2 million worth of properties was destroyed in a fire that gutted a mix of residential and commercial structures along Ongpin Street in Binondo, Manila, including one of the oldest restaurants in the city on Tuesday morning.
Senior Inspector Marvin Carbonel, the Manila Fire District Station 1 commander, said the fire started at the four-story residential building, reportedly owned by the Padilla family, at the corner of Ongpin and Benavides Streets.
The fire, believed to have been caused by electrical wiring problems, spread to 10 other nearby structures including a bakery, a drugstore and the famous Ongpin Mañosa Restaurant Co., which was built in the 1940s making it one of the oldest restaurants in Manila, Carbonel said. The restaurant was known for its pancit and noodle soup.
There were no reported deaths in the fire that lasted for more than an hour but Ronald Mirasol, a fire volunteer sustained abrasions on both hands when the fire hose slipped out of his grip.
Carbonel noted that the fire was easily controlled with the help of the Chinese fire volunteers in Binondo area. The fire officer also advised the public to be careful in handling electrical devices, which have been the common cause of fires these days.
