THE UNIVERSITY of Cebu (UC) athletic squad continued its dominating performance in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. track and field competition as it wound up with a total of 21 gold medals,13 silvers and 10 bronze medals at the end of the three-day event at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu track oval in Canduman, Mandaue City.
The Webmasters capped off their strong showing by topping the 4×100 and 4×400-meter relays men’s division, 800m run women’s division and 100m run men’s division in the college level yesterday.
UC topped the men’s side with a 16-7-4 (gold-silver-bronze) tally while the distaff side finished with a 5-6-6 record for second place.
UC topped the overall medal standings followed by Southwestern University with (7-11-9), University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (12-13-15) and University of San Carlos (5-6-6).
UC’s gold medalists yesterday were Sheena Gacayan (800m women’s), Linly Franz Navaja (100m, 4×100 and 4x400m) Dharl Pitogo, Ernesto Ibanez and Eric Escorial.
Meanwhile, Janrey Andales of USC won a gold medal in the 800m run with a time of two minutes and .64 seconds to break UC’s 2005 record of two minutes and one second.
UC’s high school team finished off with 14 gold medals.
Gold medalists were Kenneth Monzon, Bhebs Angelou Podac, Kristie Kaye, Jersel Cabatino and Jelena Dagatan, who won her third gold medal after she topped the javelin throw./CORRESPONDENT DALE G. ROSAL
