MANILA, Philippines — Alleged members of the New People’s Army ambushed a party of government troops in Albay, leaving two dead, a Philippine Army official said Monday.

Lieutenant Colonel Medel Aguilar, spokesman of the Army 9th Infantry Division, said that the the ambush happened at around 11:30 a.m. Monday at Zone 4 Sitio (sub-village) Banasan, Barangay (village) San Ramon, Daraga, Albay.

Aguilar added that the troop composed of four soldiers were riding their motorcycles and were on their way back to their camp after participating in a livelihood project.

He said that around six armed men were behind the ambush.

“Probably the NPA was behind this,” Medel said. “The other two managed to return fire, but the other two were killed, which were nearer to the attackers.”

He said that the firefight lasted for four minutes.

“Our actions now would be to coordinate with the police so that an unvestigation may push through and charges may be filed,” Medel said. “Their benefits would be given and the bayanihan team in the area would still continue their operations.”
