MANILA, Philippines – The consistently low water level in Angat Dam is no cause for concern as state hydrologists are confident that the rains will bring the level back up.

“Malaki ang naitutulong ng ulan [The rain is a big help],” Jason Bausa, hydrologist at the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, told INQUIRER.net Friday.

“.07 is a small amount that has been reduced. The rise and fall of the water is starting to break even unlike during the summer,” said Bausa in Filipino.

On Thursday, water levels at the Angat Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan was at 170.91 meters, and it fell to 170.84 meters on Friday, the lowest this year.

The water levels are still below the critical level of 180 meters, but Bausa said the water decrease was not as bad last summer when it fell to as much as .4 meters.

Water levels in Angat and as well as in the rest of dams in Luzon are also expected to increase in June and July because of the rainy season.

Water in Angat Dam, which supplies more than 90 percen of Metro Manila’s needs, flows to Ipo Dam and then La Mesa Dam.

Bausa said that even if the rains were expected to increase the water levels in Angat Dam, Metro Manila residents were still advised to conserve water.
